The Future
This is the future. She is 16 years old and is having her hair cut to donate to Locks of Love. This is her 4th time donating over ten inches of her hair. Her last donation was at age 14 after her Bat Mitzvah., when instead of gifts, she asked that money be given to Nothing but Nets to provide mosquito nets to Africa. Her donations probably gave nets to over 400 families.
This is our future. She has survived two major surgeries and the loss of all of her possessions in the past 3 years. She missed most of her sophomore year of high school and still lives in pain. In spite of all of that, she is an honor roll student and this year as a junior was inducted into three honor societies.
This is our future. She volunteers her time on the weekends to help at the local Children's Museum. She misses class time to go on field trips with the Special Needs kids who attend her school. She plays violin in her school orchestra. She has the biggest heart of anyone that I know.
She wants to be an elementary school teacher.

Very admirable thing to do - my daughter did that when she was five. Yes, she had so much hair. She has not done it since - but it's a very selfless thing to do. :)
ReplyDeleteAt 5? Wow! That is truly amazing and selfless for one that young!
DeleteI'm very impressed. You're very lucky.
ReplyDeleteI am super lucky and proud of both of my children!
DeleteOur daughter suffers from CVS and has had it for over ten years. She's had to struggle as well to do those simple things everyone takes for granted.
ReplyDeleteYour daughter has beautiful hair, and must have a big heart to think of others so much. Kudos to her for what she has accomplished.
I had not heard of CVS before and had to look that one up. I hope that your daughter is receiving good treatment and that she manages to improve her struggles.
DeleteI don't know about anybody else, but brought a tear (okay, okay, more than one, several if you must know) to my eye. Great photo and post (again).
ReplyDeleteThanks. I have a lot to be thankful for!
DeleteI'm in awe of the big-hearted, selfless acts of a teenager. You have raised an awesome daughter! I am just so moved by your photo and post. I so wish I had the opportunity to work with her in her quest to become a teacher. She has the perfect spirit.

ReplyDeleteShe was born with this spirit - I take no credit. I'm sure she would welcome any (sober) advice in the teaching business. She also has a WICKED sense of humor.
DeleteI have goose bumps everywhere goose bumps can be.
ReplyDeleteShe gives me hope that the future truly can be a better place. You have raised her well.
Hopefully her generation will get it all right.
DeleteWhat an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteShe is to me all of the time.
DeleteMy heart just exploded into a million pieces. Your daughter is INCREDIBLE. And so are you.
ReplyDeleteShe's one of a kind, for sure!
DeleteWhat a wonderful, wonderful young woman she is! It does my heart good to know there are amazing, terrific young people out there. Please tell her thank you for me!
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky to have two of those young people!
DeleteWhat an amazing girl. I know you are proud. Heck, I'm proud and I've never even met her. I hope she'll write about her experiences (if she hasn't already).
ReplyDeleteShe and her brother both make me proud. She reads and writes a lot, but is guarded still.
DeleteWhat a fantastic young woman you've raised, you must be so incredibly proud. :) Also, she has totally amazing hair. ;)
ReplyDeleteShe's the only one who doesn't think her hair is pretty. I wouldn't trade her for anything!
DeleteLook at those gorgeous curls! What an amazing young lady! You must burst with pride over having a daughter like this one!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and son have both had to overcome a lot in their lives. They are completely different, but I love and am proud of them equally.
DeleteWonderful little tribute and I expect you glow with pride.
ReplyDeleteI thought the glow was hormonal, but sure I'll take pride! She and her brother are some great kids! I am very lucky.
DeleteLM, this is beyond description. Wonderful, heartwarming, inspiring, awesome, fantastic and amazing don't even come close to describing this post and the subject of it. I am overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteAs a mom, you know how those kids can make your day and at the same time make you want to strangle them. Does one brag post make me a "mommy blogger?"
DeleteThis is an awesome story and I am very glad you shared it. The children are the future and be proud that you taught them well.
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of hope for my kids. I hope they have happy lives and can support me in my old age!
DeleteCan we trade kids? Seriously, can we? You have an amazing, wonderful, kind, intelligent daughter. I have demons from the seventh pit of hell. I hate you.
ReplyDeleteDepends. What kind of health insurance does the gov't give you? I need good specialist (physical and mental) and dental for both kids.
DeleteBy the way, since you said that you hate me, blogger labeled you as spam. And just for that no frog legs or turtle soup for you!
OK, I am in TEARS. TEARS TEARS TEARS. What an amazing and love-filled tribute!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Just so you know, she doesn't claim to be our child. She say she's from another planet and we are merely her Earth parents. We still love her as if she were our own...
DeleteWhat a wonderful post! You've given me a little glimmer of hope for the future now with this amazing young woman. You done good, Ma!
