I don't know who lives there now, but if they were to tear out the drywall in several locations, they would find our names written inside of hearts that cover some of the 2 by 4's and large support beams within the structure.
There was a lot of love within those walls. My father and I helped finish out the wiring as we knelt side by side and attached outlets and switches. Furniture came from family along with the stories that told their histories. My mother taught me to sew so that I could make valances, bed coverings, and even shower curtains. The hubby built me a spice rack and began to learn about home "repairs."
We entered as newlyweds and spent our first blissful years together there. After a few years we brought home our son to the welcome of neighbors and a yard full of friends. It was a sweet place to live.
Our "first place" would never win an award, but it holds a special spot on our "trophy shelf."
What was your first place like?

Our first place was like yours- maybe not huge or with the finest of amenities, but filled with so much love. Loved this~
ReplyDeleteWe bought a lovely cottage as our first home. What fun we had there. We had magical neighbors and we all gathered 2 or 3 evenings a week in the courtyard and shared wine and food. One of our neighbors was a chef from Indonesia and she contributed some lovely offerings. My other neighbor would bring wine and a salad and we would do side dishes. We also included an elderly woman who brought herself. The house was modest with 3 bedrooms and two levels but perfect for the two of us. We had good times there. Places are less important than the love that lives in the walls. Beautiful post!
ReplyDeleteAn electrician and a seamstress! What a wonder YOU are.
ReplyDeleteVery sweet post.
*smile*
Ha, we're still in our first place, after 25 years. We plan to move eventually, but there has always been one reason or another not to.
ReplyDeleteI like to do mine backwards. This is probably the happiest home we've had. Our first place, while it was a lovely little house, was filled with sad and tragic memories, so we sold up and moved.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really nice story and truly engulfs this theme. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely piece. I hope the family who lives their now feels all the love you put into it. Interesting use of the prompt. I like this!
ReplyDeleteOur first place was a small two bedroom in Ventura, California. I felt like a Rockefeller after we bought it for what is now not enough to by a car.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how everyone else, including me, took 'first place' to be about competition, and you're the only one to see it as 'first home together'. I wonder if that means you're an emotional thinker?
ReplyDeleteI love the way you thought of this prompt! A fabulous post and I think the people that now live in your "first place" can't help but feel the love in those walls.
ReplyDeleteOur first place was an old farmhouse that we did over. It was a cute "starter" home and was really quite charming when we sold it.
ReplyDeleteOur first place was a very old Spanish style place. It wasn't very big but had beautiful woodwork, arched entries and coved ceilings. I did so much work on it. The relationship didn't end well, but I sure loved that little house.
