it takes some brains...

brain to eyes
look for yourself
open wide
take it in
etch it upon me

brain to ears
listen carefully
strain to hear
find the heartbeat
add the sound

brain to mouth
close yourself
quiet your desire
let the eyes work
defer to your ears

brain to nose
breathe in
is there a scent
find the source
send it to me

brain to hand
put down the camera
let eyes watch the child
let ears hear her voice
let mouth remain idle
let nose smell her sweetness

Brain to itself
remember.

================
Yes. This was different for me. If you hate it , sorry. I don't have a funny today. I spent yesterday throwing out and cutting up the remainders of my children's baby pictures. I am lucky to have any.

I have also become very aware of my desire to enjoy the moment and not worry so much about recording everything with camera and video. Believe it or not, it makes watching my children so much more enjoyable. I want to beg the people around me to turn off their devices and enjoy the moment with me.

The fact that we can record with every device imaginable makes it all the more difficult to leave the moment alone. Blogging  and the internet means that we can instantly post it for all to see.

I just want to remember.

  2. Wow. That was beautifully wonderful. You don't ALWAYS have to be "funny".

  3. Carpe diem!
    Which, I'm almost positive, doesn't mean "Seize the fish!"

  4. Excellent advice. Words to live by. The present is really all that we can be sure of.

  5. Different doesn't mean bad, as this post so beautifully demonstrates. Really lovely. Enjoy your time with your kids, and then enjoy remembering your time with your kids. :-)

  6. Jo -Thanks. It's not my usual post.

    Unknown - That's all I got -memories.

    Meleah - thanks. I know the funny isn't always there - this came after I spent too much time crying over photographs.

    Josh - Thanks, I guess. Your comment reminds me of the things my dad would say when I cooked dinner as a kid.

    Al - If I could seize the fish, I would aim for a large flounder - preferably stuffed with crabmeat.

    Stephen - you are right! am hoping that my kids will grow up realizing this.

    Nicky - thanks. I had this rolling around in my head all day yesterday and had to write it down.

  10. Quiet reflection is important, and we can't always be "on".

    I liked it -- a different side of you, and frankly, a good reminder to us all.

    Don't be afraid to show us what's going on, my friend. It's what makes writing such a beautiful thing.

  11. What a great message. The brain is an amazing video recorder... I'd rather witness these milestones with my own eyes and take them in, rather than trying to shoot them through a camera.

    Becca - Thanks!

    Kelley - It's easier when your kids get older. Thanks!

    Pearl - Thanks for the kind words. I found it easier than I thought it would be. Welcome to the dark side...

    Beer - It's much easier said than done. You could just draw the images later and give them great captions!

  14. This is really a beautiful sentiment. I especially relate to the part about getting my (big) mouth to defer to my ears.

    Loved this. :)

  15. I hardly ever take pictures when I travel because I want to experience it and I find looking through the lens of the camera sets me a bit apart from the experience.
