30 Days of Photographs II - Wood

Wood

This little wooden baby chair belonged to my grandfather. He was born in 1906, so that chair held him over 100 years ago. He never knew his great-grandchildren, but I'd like to think that he would be pleased to know that it held them as well.

You might want to knock on wood for luck before you venture into the minds of the other participants:

  1. I love old things. Most of my house is furnished in antiques.

    1. We love old things too, and have quite a mixture of antiques and new stuff.

  2. That chair is terrific, I particularly like how chunky it is. It would even support my massive 15 month son. We have a few antiques but unfortunately none for the sprogs to sit on.

    1. It held my massive son 19 years ago. I don't think he could fit a foot inside of it now.

  3. Isn't it amazing how well crafted wooden chairs can endure? That's a great looking chair and terrific family heirloom. What a great pic. Nice floor too.

    1. Well, it survived the fire by luck of its location in the house. It was picked up off of a water covered floor and taken to the restoration shop. They did an amazing job and I am SO glad to still have it!

  4. This is beautiful. My house is furnished in wood, wood, wood, and more wood. Most of it antique.

    1. Thank you. We have all types of wood in our house and love all of the different colors and finishes that wood can have. We lost so many family antiques that were wood, it is a treasure to still have a few.

    1. Thanks! My family has lived in and around the same city for a couple of centuries. It is nice to know the history of some things that have survived the years.

  6. Lovely chair. It would be cool to see a toy nearby or some point of comparison to show how small this chair is. It's fun to think of all the little ones who have enjoyed this special seat.

    1. I thought about putting something in the chair. It used to have a stuffed animal in it. I decided that with the lack of toys, I would shoot it all in shades of brown.

  7. Oh my, I love the chair, but I love the story even more. I'm so glad you still have it, and that it survived the fire. :)

    1. Thank you! I can still picture my kids when they were little plopping down in it to watch tv or read a book.

  8. I love this. We have a similar chair also passed down by family. What I really like about this photo is where you placed the chair to take this photo. The contrast between the nicely crafted cabinets behind the chair and the awesome hardwood floor beneath the chair just makes that special little chair look even more beautiful. Great photo. Great story!

    1. Thanks - I did that on purpose to keep it all shades of brown. I love wood (and our new floor!)

    1. It is nice to know that I am using things that belonged to my relatives. I have a lot of them and my mother is a walking family tree who never fails to tell me where something came from.

  11. This is a great shot with all of that wood in the photo, but more so because of the story behind it. So glad that the chair was salvageable.

    1. Thanks. I was amazed at what the restorer could do with damaged wooden furniture!! He is a miracle worker. I could write several posts describing some of the things he managed to repair.

    1. Isn't that so true! There are so few nails in it and it just is sturdy as can be.
