I've been thinking...
If you start any sentence in our home with that phrase you immediately get laughed at and probably have someone write down the date and time.
But, it is true. I have been debating departing from the blogging community. When I started this blog, I needed a place to safely vent. My home was gone, my life had been turned upside down, and there were roadblocks in every direction. This blog allowed me to express myself and eventually gave me several blogging "friends" that were willing to laugh at or with me. You people saved me in a multitude of ways without even knowing me. I thank each and every one of you!
The anonymity was very purposeful. I had been warned that if I was going to rage about our school system, I needed to do so anonymously. I left the school topics behind fairly quickly and continued to blog as Laughingmom - eventually even posting my aging mug for the "world" or about 7 bloggers to see.
Lately I have had no voice or really any desire to write a post. I have in the past year participated in three month-long challenges, two with photographs and one where I actually had to write. These were without a doubt the most enjoyable experiences that I have had in my blogging adventure. This was due entirely to the interactions that I had with fellow participants and others who read and commented. After each challenge, though, I have had nothing to inspire me to post. I do read posts from other bloggers, but find it too time consuming to read the hundreds of entries in my feed every day. I rarely check my stats as they don't interest me, but every so often I check to see if my anonymous and most faithful reader from Pierre, SD is still checking in on me. Thanks, whoever you are...
I have debated joining the madness on Facebook for years and that may actually be the path that I now take. The real issue that I had previously was trying to keep my real and my blogging identities separate. I'm not seeing that as being a problem now, as I would just be me and leave Laughingmom behind.
My attention was piqued when I saw that a retailer that I follow on Twitter was giving a better discount to those who saw their ad on social media than to those who get their e-mails. How much of this am I missing? I have such mixed feelings about Facebook. My kids don't even use it. My husband has an account only for a business reason. And I still harbor a lot of negative feelings about our fire being posted on-line before we even had first responders arrive. Sure, there are pluses and minuses associated with all social media, I just need the good to outweigh the bad.
I value all of your thoughts and suggestions. I know that all of this social internet is a huge time suck, whether it is Twitter, Facebook, or blog feeds, I'm just looking for some middle ground.
Should I stop thinking now?
I would REALLY hate for you to quit blogging, but I definitely understand your reasoning.
ReplyDeleteI am a HUGE fan of Facebook. {I only use twitter to promote my blog and other peoples blogs} Facebook is actually LESS time than reading hundreds of blogs and the interaction with others is immediate. And super fun.
If you have to quit blogging PLEASE start a Facebook account.
XOXOX
Believe me, if i had a thought to write, I would. It is an odd feeling...xxxooo back atcha!
DeleteOk, I'm going to be very supportive and say: Please don't stop blogging (says the girl who hasn't written a post in over a month). Seriously. I'll even host another *gulp* writing challenge if you stick around.
ReplyDeleteOk, really seriously, I will miss you if you decide to stop. I'm not on social media much because I have to be on it for work, it kind of loses the appeal.
I may just do a challenge at some point. Not yours, though...you never gave me enough points!!!
Deleteblogging comes in waves. sometimes we can ride a high one and feel really good about it and other times we're just busy with life and have no time or use for it.
ReplyDeletemy opinion is that the blog should be left as is, even if you don't write anything. then, if the mood strikes, you can write. and if it doesn't, there's no harm in it just sitting there doing nothing.
i like facebook. it helps me feel less alone in my isolated world of home.
I think the wave just beached me...You are right in that I can just let this blog fester like a bad wound and do nothing.
DeleteI think we can get to wrapped up in social media if we allow ourselves to and let it consume all of our time and energy. I like blogging because I work at home and it gives me a little bit of an outlet to interact with others, kind of like talking around the water cooler or in the cafeteria at work. I'm not a super big fan of FB. I'm on it mainly to keep up with my extended family and to play Word With Friends. Otherwise, I could gladly give it up and not miss it. I've taken blogging breaks and have always wanted to come back after about a month to six weeks. Anyway, my advice is like someone else said, do keep your blog even if you decide not to blog any more on it. Make it private, but chances are there's probably some good stuff here you might want to look back on down the road. I have found the hard way when I've deleted blogs in the past that I always wished I had kept them because I had written something good that I no longer had access to.
ReplyDeleteWhatever you decide I know it will be the best for you! Good luck!
betty
Thanks, Betty! You have been very sweet in your comments in the short time that you've been around my blog. Surviving all of the lunatics from the photo challenge makes you tops in my book!
DeleteI may be the faithful reader from Pierre, SD, who checks every day to see if you've posted something. I check every day on about 7-8 blogs that I've discovered and that give me a distraction from work for just a few minutes. A little humor. I'll miss you if you stop, but just know I've enjoyed your blog.
ReplyDeleteRicki!!!!! I knew it was you!!! How have you been? Just kidding of course.
DeleteI am so glad that you enjoyed reading my drivel. I wish that you had commented along the way, or did my crazy blogging friends scare you?!?! Thanks for always checking on me!!!
The transformation from what made us start our blogs to why we maintain it and why we would continue it is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI started mine to try to build on the creativity that I had set aside for a while.
I found a community and I found loyal readers and I found friends.
It's coming to three years and some of the passion is no longer there. But I keep doing it. I don't publish 10-15 times a month anymore.
So maybe you don't have to retire the blog but just visit it less.
It is really sad that you are leaving. Useful information on this blog were more than great. Good Luck!

OH WOW... I am just seeing this! I get so behind. And nothing since! What did you decide? I have WAY too many sites... I am going to get rid of a ton and focus on a few... and now that NaBloPoMo is done, I am only posting about twice a week. The "internetz" can take up too much real time!
