The empty bottle

"My cup runneth over." What a phrase. Taken from the 23rd Psalm and spoken from generation to generation. Now it is popularized in rap lyrics, although I think a rapper's cup is most likely a bit more glamorous than that of a poor Shepard of biblical times.

It can be said that this phrase rarely describes my day. Generally I am the person left with the empty bottle after filling everyone else's cups to the maximum.

It comes from being a mom. That's my job, plain and simply described as taking care of those around me. While it leaves me sitting with the empty bottle at the end of the day, it fills my cups in the proverbial sense when my kids or spouse have a successful day.

Laughingdaughter adds:

And because of us, it often runneth over with coffee.

Now head on over to We Work for Cheese before the bottle is empty.

  1. What a PERFECT description of motherhood!!!! You are so right... We give all of ourselves to our family until there is nothing left. Except on weekends I do what I can to have a bottle in the freezer... Of vodka!

  6. I am often running on empty as well. Even today, as I stayed home with the kids for a snow day, Tony found me searching Pinterest.... completely asleep. *sigh*

  9. Beautiful metaphor. I'm a youngish male with no kids, so thoughts like this simply don't occur to me. I really appreciate your point of view, LM.
